Polytene chromosomes and phylogenetic relationships in ten Drosophila species of the annulimana group (Diptera, Drosophilidae) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Tosi,Deborah; Pereira,Maria Augusta Q.R.; Vilela,Carlos R..
Polytene chromosomes banding patterns of ten of the 16 species of the Neotropical annulimana group of Drosophila were used to propose phylogenetic relationships among species. Drosophila annulimana chromosomes were used as the standard sequence and the most parsimonious series of changes (paracentric inversions) were considered. In some cases, intermediate hypothetical rearrangements were proposed to explain the sequences present in a given species. A total of 47 paracentric inversions were detected, most of them (44.7%) in chromosome 4. Three subgroups, partially coincident with those previously proposed based on morphological and karyotypical analyses, were classified as: 1) annulimana subgroup (Drosophila annulimana, D. aracataca, D. aragua, and D....

Carvalho,Adenomar N. de.
Portanus Ball, 1932 comprises 45 species that occur in Brazil, including Portanus felixi sp. nov. described and illustrated herein. The genus is close to Paraportanus Carvalho & Cavichioli, 2009 and can be distinguished from it by having a transversal groove on the basal third of the subgenital plates. The new species can be distinguished from the other species of the genus by the characters of male genitalia, especially by the pygofer with the apical process pointed, sclerotized and dorso-ventrally directed; and by the aedeagus with apodeme on the basal third.

New species of Alpaida (Araneae, Araneidae) from Rondônia, Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Nogueira,André A.; Dias,Stefan R..
ABSTRACT We described a new species of spider, Alpaida clarindoi sp. nov. (Araneidae), from the southwestern Amazon forest. The new species is distinguished from most Alpaida by the presence of a pair of shoulders spines. Females can be separated from similar species by the subquadrangular shape of the epigynum, and males by the shape of the terminal apophysis and the tegulum, which possess an apical pointed tip. Alpaida clarindoi sp. nov. is described based on both sexes.

A new species of Alpaida (Araneae, Araneidae) from Southeastern Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Castanheira,Pedro de S.; Baptista,Renner L. C..
ABSTRACT Alpaida venger sp. nov. is described based on males and females from Pedra Branca State Park, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This species seems to be related to Alpaida scriba (Mello-Leitão, 1940) and Alpaida alticeps (Keyserling, 1879) due to similar body shape and color, but is easily distinguished by the very elongated median apophysis, the massive lobe of tegulum and the hooked paracymbium of male palp. Females have elongated epigyne as A. scriba, but can be distinguished by the wider lips and shorter scape.

Acanthotylotra alvarengai (Porifera, Demospongiae) new genus and species of sponge from Tocantins river, Pará State, Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Volkmer-Ribeiro,Cecilia; Tavares,Maria da Conceição M; Oliveira,Karina Fürstenau de.
Acanthotylotra a new monotypic genus of freshwater sponge is defined. Its sole species A. alvarengai sp. nov. is described based upon microscopic specimens recovered from the Tocantins river, Pará State, Brazil, when the deep rocky substrate was temporarily exposed downstream from the dam at the time it was closed for lake formation. A unique set of megascleres, allied to the paucity of spongin, the renieroid skeleton and the fact that gemmules or new specimens remain undetected, call for the proposition of a new monospecific genus to be retained as incertae sedis until new larger and probably gemmuliferous specimens come to be found.

A new species of Falsocaenia (Coleoptera: Lycidae) from Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Nascimento,Elynton A. do; Bocakova,Milada.
ABSTRACT A new species of Lycidae, Falsocaenia santatereza sp. nov. is described and illustrated. This species is a member of a Müllerian mimicry ring from the Atlantic Forest in Brazil, presenting color pattern also found in other sites of Neotropical region. There are now 15 species from Falsocaenia Pic, 1922, all restricted to Neotropical region. Additionally, a new site of occurrence is registered for Falsocaenia paranana (Pic, 1922).

A new synonym and description of two new species of Portanus (Hemiptera, Cicadellidae, Xestocephalinae) from Brazil and Bolivia Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Carvalho,Adenomar N.; Cavichioli,Rodney R..
ABSTRACT One leafhopper species of the genus Portanus Ball, 1932 is synonymized: P. spinosus is considered junior synonym of P. hasemani. In this paper, we offer the redescription of P. hasemani as well as description of two new species of Portanus, based on specimens from the type series of Scaphoideus punctulatus Osborn, 1923 (= P. hasemani): P. bifurcus sp. nov. and P. delsara sp. nov. The descriptions are based on features from the external morphology and male genital structures. Comparisons of the two new taxa with the remaining Portanus species are provided.

A new species of Alpaida (Araneae, Araneidae) from Caxiuanã National Forest, Oriental Amazonia, Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Abrahim,Naiara; Bonaldo,Alexandre B..
Alpaida guto n. sp. is described based on males and females from State of Pará, Brazil. This species appears to be the most abundant Alpaida O. P.-Cambridge, 1889 species in Caxiuanã National Forest, eastern Amazonia. The males seem to be close to A. antonio Levi, 1988 but can be easily distinguished by the terminal apophysis with rounded distal lobe and long, slender basal prong; females differ from those of A. yotoco Levi, 1988 by the median lobe with a basal constriction and by the bilobed median plate.
